The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine doubts the truth of recent reports of the alleged capture of Ukrainian mercenaries by rebel fighters in Libya.

"We really doubt that this information is trustworthy," Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleh Voloshyn told Interfax-Ukraine on Tuesday.

He noted there had been similar reports in the media in February 2011, although no official agency had ever confirmed them.

The Foreign Ministry said it assumed that the recent reports in the media on the seizure of Ukrainian mercenaries that allegedly fought for Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi by Libyan opposition fighters would not be confirmed.

At the same time, Voloshyn stated that the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine is checking the reports.

Earlier, some media – with reference to a posting on Twitter of an employee of a U.S. TV channel – reported that the Libyan opposition had seized Ukrainian mercenaries who had been fighting for Gaddafi.
