Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Thursday participated in the opening of Kyiv Engineering School and congratulated its schoolchildren, their parents and teachers on Knowledge Day.

"I would like to wish you a good school year," the presidential press service quoted President Yanukovych as saying on Thursday.

He described the new school as an example of the future education system.

"We are taking this step to the future together. Future Korolevs, Antonovs and Patons will study here," Yanukovych said.

He said that new schools would continue to open in Ukraine. Yanukovych said that 20 schools would be commissioned in the country in the 2011-2012 academic year.

President Yanukovych also said that following the example of the engineering school, almost all schools in Ukraine would be equipped with modern medical centers that will monitor the health of schoolchildren.

Minister of Education and Science, Youth and Sport Dmytro Tabachnyk was not present at the opening of the school, although the minister usually attends such official events along with the head of state.
