Ukraine should take a more active position in the process of regulating the Transdniestria conflict, foreign experts said.

"Ukraine should be very active as a powerful party in this process, and actively follow its line," Deputy Director of the American Institute in Ukraine James George Jatras said at a press conference hosted by Interfax-Ukraine in Kyiv on Monday.

According to him, despite the fact that the issue of the future of Transdniestria is connected to territory "near Ukraine," in which many Ukrainians live, it is still not on the list of key diplomatic issues of Ukraine.

Senior Research Fellow at The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies Dr. John C. Hulsman, who also participated in the press conference, also thinks that Ukraine’s policy regarding Transdniestria appears rather passive and should be more active.

"Without Ukraine, Russia and Romania playing active roles, one should not expect that the process to come to an end and start working without the active participation of local partners," he said.

The latest 5+2 meeting was held in Moscow on June 21. After that meeting, a row broke out between Moldova and Transdniestria, but they eventually agreed to meet again in September.
