The Embassy of Ukraine in Libya has said it is continuing to work for the release of 22 Ukrainians detained in Tripoli.

The press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported on Wednesday, with reference to the ministry’s spokesman, Oleksandr Dykusarov, that on Sept. 13 Ambassador of Ukraine Mykola Nahorny met with a representative from the foreign policy department of the National Transitional Council of Libya and the UN humanitarian coordinator Libya.

The Ukrainian side one more time said the detained Ukrainians are not military men and worked in Libya under private contracts in the oil and gas sphere. In connection with this, Ukraine asked to be told the reason for the detention as soon as possible, so the Ukrainians can be released and returned home.

It is expected that a number of meetings will soon be held to improve the conditions in which the citizens of Ukraine are held near Mitiga International Airport and their transfer to a group of other citizens detained on the territory of the oil company in Libya near Gargaresh.

The health of the Ukrainian citizens is satisfactory – they are supplied with food, drinking water, in addition, they can talk to their relatives by phone, the foreign ministry said.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on September 5 confirmed the detention in Libya of 23 Ukrainian civilian specialists.

One of them has already been released with the assistance of diplomats, and the rest are still being checked.
