You're reading: Libya’s new authorities deny rumors about execution of Ukrainians

The National Transitional Council of Libya has confirmed a report about the detention of Ukrainians in Tripoli, but categorically denied media reports about the execution of Ukrainian mercenaries in the city of Misrata.

"Leader of the National Transitional Council Mustafa Abdul Jalil is against … lynching," a spokesman for the National Transitional Council, Jalal al-Gallal, said in an interview with the Russian service of the BBC.

He noted that he was aware about "26 Ukrainians being detained in Tripoli," but he knew nothing about the murder of foreign nationals in Misrata.

The spokesman also said that the forces of the new Libyan government in Misurata categorically denied the execution of Ukrainians.

Croatian media outlets reported earlier that 11 Ukrainian mercenaries, who had been fighting for Muammar Gaddafi, had allegedly been executed in the Libyan city of Misrata.

The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine said it was verifying the reports.
