The selective use of justice in Ukraine could have a negative effect on the ratification process after the signing of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Jose Manuel Pinto Teixeira has said.
"We’re holding talks on the association agreement. They are very important for Brussels and Kyiv. At the same time, serious risks arise because of the selective use of justice," he told journalists in Kyiv on Monday.
Teixeira said that the EU leadership regularly informed the Ukrainian authorities about the risks of the negative impact of certain events in the country on the ratification process.
He also noted that Ukrainian legislation left over from the Soviet era – the Criminal Code in particular – should be changed in order to meet European standards.
