Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on September 19 instructed Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and Foreign Intelligence Service Chief Hryhoriy Illiashov to take all necessary steps to protect the rights and interests of the Ukrainians detained in Libya.

The issue of security guarantees for the detained Ukrainians and their early release are under special monitoring by Yanukovych, the presidential press service reported on Tuesday, with reference to the head of the presidential administration, Serhiy Liovochkin.

As reported, 23 Ukrainian citizens (civilian specialists who had come to Libya to work in the country’s oil industry) were detained in Libya early in September.

Croatian media have also reported that eleven Ukrainian mercenaries were executed in Misrata, Libya. However, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry says the reports are untrue.
