Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said he intends to impose a moratorium on the closure of Ukrainian-language schools in the east of the country the Russian-language schools in the west.

In an interview for the Evenings with Vitaliy Korotych TV program aired on the First National TV Channel on Wednesday night, the president said that the closure of these schools was a violation of human rights.

"Indeed, the dynamics are such that in the west they are trying to shut down Russian-language schools, and in the east Ukrainian-language ones. This is definitely a violation of human rights… It certainly has to stop. I will soon discuss this matter, perhaps even today or tomorrow, and I will declare a moratorium on the closure of Russian-language schools in the west, and Ukrainian-language ones in the east," the president said.
