About 300 members of organizations of Chornobyl nuclear disaster cleanup veterans are protesting against the cancellation of benefits outside the cabinet building on Wednesday.

The protestors are carrying placards saying "Hands off Chornobyl law!" "We stopped the atom – we will stop the Cabinet’s lawlessness."

Ukraine’s Vice Premier and Social Policy Minister Sergiy Tigipko went to meet with the protesters and expressed the cabinet’s readiness to meet with several Chornobyl activists on the issue of benefits cancellation.

He assured the protesters that disabled Chornobyl veterans with 25 years of tenure would be entitled to a pension of Hr 2,900, while the average pension in Ukraine is currently Hr 1,205 and the disability pension Hr 950.

When Tigipko approached the protesting Chornobyl veterans they shouted "Shame!" and "Liar!"

The protesters said that they did not wish to hold any talks with officials, but insisted on the cancellation of a relevant bill.

On Tuesday a similar protest was staged outside the Ukrainian parliament.
