Corrupt officials are feeling the effect of the new anti-corruption legislation, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said during a meeting with candidates for the posts of heads of district state administrations.

"Those who did business on the budget and searched for positions, from which that was possible, have already felt it [the new legislation]," the president said.

He added that the fight against corruption might face resistance from corrupt officials.

"The officials that are deprived of lucrative positions and that got their wrists slapped, will not like it," the press service cited Yanukovych as saying on Wednesday.

The president also stressed that the fight against corruption was aimed at uncovering businesses hidden in shadows.

"Capital hidden in the shadows is a basis for abuses, corruption and violations of other laws. This disturbs the life of the people in our country," the president said.

"What part of the population is involved in corruption? Experts say not more than 5%. At whose expense do these 5% live? At the expense of the other 95% who pay taxes," Yanukovych said.
