Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said that Ukraine is ready to consider synchronous ratification of an agreement regarding the free trade area (FTA).

"Ukraine is ready to discuss the question of synchronous ratification of this agreement which was adopted," Yanukovych said at an informal meeting of the CIS council of the heads of states, which opened in Moscow.

He asked Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to put the matter to discussion.

Yanukovych also confirmed Ukraine’s intention to take active part in the CIS work. Noting that the CIS has proved viable, he said that this format should "at least" be maintained and work on improving the CIS should be carried out.

Work on the long awaited FTA agreement has continued, Yanukovych said.

Almost every CIS president signed the FTA agreement in St. Petersburg on October 18б 2012 at a meeting of the CIS prime ministers. Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan did not sign the document saying that they will consider a possibility to sign the document before the year’s end.

The FTA agreement has laid a foundation for trade and economic relations within the CIS. The agreement came to replace the 1994 agreement, which in fact has never worked.
