A court in the Egyptian city of Ismailia has sentenced Ukrainian citizen Eduard Chikosh to 25 years in prison for smuggling weapons across the Israeli-Egyptian border, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oleksandr Dykusarov said at a briefing on Tuesday.

The verdict was announced on March 12. The court also sentenced two Israeli citizens to 25 years in prison. The convicts also have to pay a fine of 50,000 Egyptian pounds.

Dykusarov noted that it was difficult for Ukrainian diplomats to find a place in which the arrested Ukrainian stayed.

"We are also concerned that the court focused in its ruling on the fact that those arrested were foreigners and infidels," he said.

Dykusarov said that the Foreign Ministry planned to obtain the text of the court ruling in order to take further steps to protect the Ukrainian citizen.
