You're reading: Yanukovych chit chats briefly with Obama

Under fire in Washington and Brussels for alleged political persecutions, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych managed to hold a brief discussion wtih U.S. President Barack Obama during the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit held on March 26-27 in South Korea’s capital.

It was not immediately clear what both leaders discussed during the short encounter.

Yanukovych’s press service hyped up the meeting by posting several photographs on the presidential website (www.president.gov.ua) with a one sentence story taking note that both men had “met” during the summit.

By taking note of the meeting, the Ukrainian leader’s office was apparently trying to counter allegations that the U.S. is limiting contact with Yanukovych amidst allegations that opposition leaders, starting wtih ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko who was sentenced to 7 years in prison last year, are being persecuted through “show trials” under his leadership.
