The husband of Ukraine's former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko claims authorities in the former Soviet nation are trying to kill her.

Oleksandr Tymoshenko also says photos of her wife lying bruised in a prison cell are "shocking and horrifying."

Yulia Tymoshenko is serving a seven-year prison sentence on charges of abusing her powers when she was the prime minister.

Oleksandr Tymoshenko says that the injuries — allegedly inflicted by prison guards — are "a rehearsal of her physical destruction — a murder that the authorities have been planning to carry out since the beginning of the repression against her."

He told The Associated Press in Prague, where he has been granted political asylum, that his wife "is a fighter, and will stand until the end."
