Kyiv, May 1 (Interfax-Ukraine) – At a meeting of the steering group for the preparation for the Euro 2012 European Football Championship, UEFA pointed to the concerns among the European politicians and media over the political situation in Ukraine.
"UEFA alerted the Ukrainian delegation about the concerns raised by the political situation in Ukraine among European politicians and media. Even though UEFA, as a sports organization, never interferes in political matters, UEFA has asked the Ukrainian delegation to convey these concerns to the competent authorities," UEFA said in a statement posted on its Web site on Monday.
The governments of Ukraine and Poland took part in a meeting the Euro 2012 coordinating group led by UEFA President Michel Platini at the UEFA Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
The meeting was held 39 days prior to the opening match of the championship, which is to take place in Warsaw on June 8. The participants addressed the current situation in security and preparations for the championship. They noted significant progress in the preparations and readiness of the all the principal facilities, in particular stadiums and airports.
The security situation around the tournament, and in particular in Ukraine following the recent events in Dnipropetrovsk, was thoroughly reviewed and UEFA received a clear assurance by the governments of the host countries that all necessary steps are being taken to guarantee the safety of all visitors, from fans to participating players.
