You're reading: Ukrainian nationalists burn red banner on Hoverla mountain peak

About 100 activists of Ukraine's nationalistic organization, Svoboda (Freedom), and of the Lustratsia (Lustration) public organization, climbed the Hoverla mountain peak to protect the country's national symbols from other organizations' encroachments, Svoboda reported on Wednesday.

"We have learnt that the members of the Rodina (the Motherland) and Russky Mir (the Russian World) parties want to replace the Ukrainian blue and yellow national flag with the red banner of the Soviet Union and break the stone trident. Our members climbed the Hoverla mountain peak to protect our national symbols from those who hate Ukraine. Our activists will remain at the top and at the foot of the mountain all day long," it said.

"In protest against the all-out Ukraine-phobia we have burnt the red banner of the non-existent state and the flag of the Party of Regions, which is harboring all anti-Ukraine actions," Svoboda said.
