Ukraine has seen backslide from democratic principles in some areas, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft has said.

"We have seen backslide in certain areas, which manifests itself in different forms," the diplomat said in an interview with Ukrayinska Pravda Internet newspaper posted on Friday.

He noted that the trial of opposition figures looked like selective persecution of political opponents.

Tefft also said that Ukrainian courts were politically biased, domestic and foreign investors continued to face the illegal seizures, intimidation and selective application of the law.

According to him, problems with U.S. companies are only solved after diplomats meet with relevant senior Ukrainian officials.

At the same time, Tefft said that these issues were brought about not by the pro-government Party of Regions. They are part of the system, which must be changed, the ambassador said.
