Officials say an explosion on a tram in central Ukraine that left nine people injured was caused by gunpowder carried by a hunting enthusiast.

Emergencies Ministry spokeswoman Yulia Yershova says the Monday afternoon blast in Dnipropetrovsk occurred when a hunter riding the tram dropped a briefcase containing the gunpowder.

It was not immediately clear what caused it to detonate.

Yershova said nine people suffered light burns.

In April, four bombs planted in garbage bins went off in Dnipropetrovsk, injuring 31 people. Four people have been arrested in the case, charged with trying to extort $4.5 million from local authorities.

Dnipropetrovsk is not hosting any matches in the Euro2012 football tournament.
