Lazarenko's bail may be revoked today by U.S. court

Kyiv Post - Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Pavlo Lazarenko will be back before a judge in the United States later today, according to his lawyer Dennis Riordan.

Riordan said that the U.S. Justice Department filed to have Lazarenko’s bail revoked on the basis that an appeals court upheld some of his convictions.

On Sept. 26, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reversed six and upheld eight of Lazarenko’s convictions and remanded the case for resentencing.

Riordan called the bail proceedings an “extraordinary effort” on the part of the US government to get Lazarenko back into custody.

“For the first time in my career the US government is attempting to revoke bail and get a defendant back into custody before the appellate process is complete.”

Riordan said that his office was notified about the request to revoke bail on Sept. 29 and that a district court will hear the case on Oct. 1.

In 2000, Lazarenko was indicted on 53 counts, 45 of which have since been dropped.

Lazarenko has been under house arrest since 2003,

Riordan said that Lazarenko will continue appealing his convictions, all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, if necessary.
