Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn have congratulated the Ukrainian people on New Year and Christmas. Tymoshenko said in her letter of congratulation, posted on the government's official website on Wednesday, that 2008 was a difficult year.

"Nevertheless, we have survived. Ukraine is a strong state capable of tackling any problems. I know that next year will definitely be better. I believe everything will be fine. It could not have been otherwise, because we live in the world's best country," she said.

"Of course, we should all rely on our own efforts, work and look after our estate. This is right. But apart from that, I would ask you to believe in miracle. Believe that your dreams will come true," Tymoshenko said.

Lytvyn said that despite challenges and anxieties, New Year holidays would give Ukrainians pleasure of sincere communication, good feelings and hopes.

"Ukraine has always found a way out of critical situations. This is the main lesson, given by the past and recent past to us and recalled by the present," he said.

Lytvyn expressed confidence that the external and internal influence of the crisis is not a reason for mistrust and disappointment, but a call to persistent, comprehensive and responsible steps.

"All MPs understand their civil duty this way. Contrary to serious confrontation, they resumed work of the Verkhovna Rada, called for the revival of a practically destroyed government system and for passing urgent measures to save the economy and preserve the country's vital activity," he said.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko is currently in his residence in the village of Huta in Ivano-Frankivsk region. His New Year address to the Ukrainian people will be broadcast by all national TV channels before midnight on December 31, 2008.
