Yushchenko orders investigation into mass food poisoning of children in Zakarpattia region

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has asked Prosecutor General Oleksandr Medvedko to oversee the investigation into the mass food poisoning of children who spent their holidays in Zakarpattia region.

The president ordered the prosecutor to investigate the causes of this situation and take proper measures to avert the further infliction of harm to the health of citizens, the presidential press service reported on Monday.

Medvedko was ordered to inform Yushchenko in person of the results of the investigation.

Children from Kyiv who spent their holidays at a sanatorium in Zakarpattia region suffered food poisoning on July 4 when they were returning home by train.

A total of 76 people, including 69 children and seven adults, were taken to hospital while traveling to Kyiv. A total of 256 people (240 children and 16 adults) left the sanatorium, where they were a given packed meal before departure.

Doctors described the health of 166 children who arrived in Kyiv on Sunday as satisfactory.
