You're reading: Health Ministry: 34 dead from flu in three western Ukraine oblasts

The Ukrainian Health Ministry has confirmed 34 deaths from flu and acute respiratory viral diseases in Ternopil region, Ivano-Frankivsk region, and Lviv region from October 19 until 21:30 of October 30.

Health Minister Vasyl Kniazevych announced this on the Fifth TV Channel.

"To date, we officially have 34 cases of deaths, including two children," the minister said.

As of 21:30 of Friday, 133 people are in grave condition, the number of people who contracted flu of acute respiratory viral infection was over 92,000.

The health minister said the flu starts spreading in the central regions of Ukraine.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Health Ministry on October 30 declared the A(H1N1) flu epidemic throughout Ukraine.

On October 29, the Health Ministry confirmed 30 deaths from the flue and acute respiratory viral diseases in Ternopil region, Ivano-Frankivsk region, and Lviv region in the west of Ukraine since October 19, including six deaths in Ivano-Frankivsk region, 12 deaths in Ternopil region, and 12 deaths in Lviv region.

The total number of people infected was 81,000, including 33,500 children, as of 09:00 on October 30. Out of these, 2,341 (including 1,100 children) had been hospitalized.

The Cabinet of Ministers has introduced quarantine in nine regions, banned organization of mass events, and closed schools for three weeks because of the epidemic influenza.
