Fourteen cases of the A(H1N1) influenza have been officially confirmed in Ukraine.

Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko announced this in an address to Ukrainians on October 31.

«Fourteen cases of the Californian influenza (the A(H1N1) influenza) had been established on the territory of our country as of 21:00 on October 31,» Tymoshenko said.

She said that the government has declared an epidemic of the A(H1N1) influenza in Ukraine because it is a very dangerous illness that can threaten the lives of people.

At the same time, Tymoshenko called on Ukrainians not to panic.

She stressed that only 14 out of the 178,000 cases of influenza that have been registered in Ukraine this year involve the A(H1N1) influenza.

Tymoshenko also stressed that statistics from the World Health Organization indicates that only about 1% of the A(H1N1) influenza cases have resulted in deaths.

According to Tymoshenko, the government took several measures to prevent the epidemic and has set up central and regional headquarters for monitoring the situation and taking urgent measures.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Health Ministry declared an epidemic of the A(H1N1) influenza in Ukraine on October 30.

The Cabinet of Ministers has introduced quarantine in nine regions, banned organization of mass events, and closed schools for three weeks because of the epidemic influenza.
