You're reading: Lytvyn: Inflating issue of flu epidemic in Ukraine benefits politicians, medics

The racket over the flu epidemic will end on January 17, 2010, the day of presidential elections in Ukraine, said Verkhovna Rada speaker and presidential candidate Volodymyr Lytvyn.

"One thing is certain that the epidemic will end on January 17. Because it will be no longer interesting. The subject will be used up," he said at a press conference in Luhansk on Wednesday.

In his opinion, Ukraine is facing not so much of a flu epidemic as a political epidemic.

"This willingness to come to the lead of the process reminds me of the competition that we witnessed in the past when there were floods in western Ukraine and some other regions. There was a competition then – who comes first, who complains more pitifully and who promises more. The problem was not resolved fully and the issue was closed," Lytvyn said.

The racket over the flu epidemic "is a distraction to avoid answering unpleasant questions," he said.

He questioned "why one third of the homes in the country, every fifth school and every sixth day care center remained unheated."

"And one more thing. A very big favor was done to those who are involved in the medical sphere. I mean medicines, medical preparations and so on. They’ve got enough to last for ten years," Lytvyn said.
