The Verkhovna Rada has created the state system of physical protection of nuclear units, materials, radioactive wastes, and other sources of ionizing radiation.

The law introduces relevant amendments into the laws «On physical protection of nuclear units, nuclear materials, radioactive wastes, other sources of ionizing radiation» and «On use of nuclear power and nuclear security.»

The creation of the system aims the protection of ionizing radiation sources taking in account threat envisioning actions of potential violators willing to illegally withdraw radioactive materials; provision of state control over condition of physical protection of nuclear materials, etc.

The subjects of the state system of physical protection are a specially authorized central executive bodies and agencies providing enforcing activity: the Security Service of Ukraine, and Internal troops of the Internal Affairs Ministry.

The amendments envision the introduction of the responsibility of a licensee for provision of protection of sources of ionizing radiation, nuclear units, etc.

Asit wasearlier reported, on July 8, 2005, Ukraine signed the amendment to the Convention on physical protection of nuclear materials at the diplomatic conference in Vienna, Austria. The Convention took effect on Aug. 5, 1993.

In August 2009, the State industrial safety committee and the State nuclear regulation committee agreed on joint provision of control over the safety of nuclear units, uranium facilities, and ore-mining enterprises.
