Twenty-five countries are providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine in its fight against the flu epidemic, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Valeriy Dzhyhun has said.

He said at a briefing on Nov. 23 that respective decisions had been taken at state and governmental levels in 21 countries and at the level of departments in four countries.

Dzhyhun said that humanitarian cargoes had already been delivered from the governments of nine countries, various international organizations, the Swedish Armed Forces, a number of religious communities, the Ukrainian Diaspora, as well as charity foundations and entrepreneurial agencies.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said that some countries, particularly Germany, Finland, and Malaysia, are currently considering the question of providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

"A number of foreign pharmaceutical companies, other companies and entrepreneurial agencies are also considering the provision of humanitarian aid to Ukraine," Dzhyhun said.

He said that the U.S. Department of Defense and the Ukrainian Health Ministry are drafting a list of humanitarian cargoes to fight the epidemic of the H1N1 flu.

He also said that Ukraine’s embassies in various countries had sent letters on behalf of the Ukrainian president to the leaders of Australia, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, Canada, Hungary and France, as well as their governments, asking them to render assistance to Ukraine in purchasing vaccines against seasonal and pandemic flu.
