The Ukrainian Embassy in Russia said that the death of a Ukrainian national on the Russian-Ukrainian border by Russian border guards may increase tensions.

It was reported earlier that Russian border guards shot and killed a Ukrainian supposedly trying to illegally cross the border in the early hours of Thursday.

"This is definitely an extraordinary event for both countries, which, regardless of its circumstances, adds some tensions not so much in relations between the two states as between the two peoples," Oleh Voloshin, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Embassy in Moscow, told Interfax on Thursday.

The incident happened on the border between two countries having very close relations, he said.

Ukraine is hoping that a thorough investigation will be carried out.

"A Ukrainian citizen’s death on the Russian-Ukrainian border cannot leave Ukrainian society indifferent, and we hope this tragedy will be investigated in a most careful way," he said.

The public in both countries should be informed about the investigation and its results as soon as possible, he said.

"We also expect that all essential measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future," he said.

"The Ukrainian embassy is closely following the situation and is maintaining permanent contact with relevant Russian agencies," he added.
