Presidential candidate and Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has said that it is early to call a nationwide referendum on the country's accession to NATO.

He gave his views speaking at the eighth congress of the Our Ukraine party on Saturday.

The president said that people will not receive answers on the questions regarding state security neither from BYT leader Yulia Tymoshenko nor from the leader of the Party of Regions Viktor Yanukovych.

“If only “she” wins, the second step that will be done is a referendum. I’m sure that this should not be done,” Yuschenko said.

He said that Ukrainian society today needs information.

“Let’s comprehend the process,” he said.

Yuschenko said that one should not be in a hurry with conclusions, as the country should keep in mind the national interest in the issue of Ukraine’s joining NATO.

The leader of the party is Vira Ulianchenko, the head of the presidential secretariat.
