The law deals with financial and economic issues concerning operating organizations' fulfillment of the law on the use of nuclear energy and nuclear safety, with regard to improving the living and labor conditions of citizens living near uranium ore. Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko has signed amendments to legislation on the social protection of people living near uranium ore processing plants, nuclear plants and facilities designed to hold nuclear waste, the presidential press service reported on Dec. 1.

As reported, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the relevant law on Jul. 4, 2009. The head of the state vetoed it and returned to the parliament with his proposals on Jul. 18, 2009.

The MPs at a sitting on Nov. 17, 2009 didn't support any of the president's proposals and overrode his veto of this law.

The law deals with financial and economic issues concerning operating organizations' fulfillment of the law on the use of nuclear energy and nuclear safety, with regard to improving the living and labor conditions of citizens living near uranium ore processing plants, nuclear plants and facilities designed to hold nuclear waste.

The law is also directed at the effective use of these funds and the state control over the fulfillment of the established procedures.

Moreover, the law foresees local communities being consulted on the use of these funds.
