The Health Ministry on Dec. 14 said flu-related illness reached epidemic proportions again in 13 oblasts.

Since the start of the epidemic, more than 2.5 million Ukrainians have fallen sick with acute respiratory illness. More than 500 have died.

According to the Heath Ministry, over 150,000 people have been hospitalized with flu-like illness since Oct. 29.

More than 84,000 new cases were reported between Dec. 7 to Dec. 13, an increase of 30,000 from the previous week. The latest resport says 114 people are currently in intensive care, with 14 on respirators.

Pro-government deputies on Dec. 14 said they would re-floor a measure (vetoed on Nov. 3 by President Victor Yushchenko) to provide Hr 1 billion to combat the epidemic. To date, no plans have been announced to procure and administer anti-flu vaccines.
