The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, has allocated over Hr 600 million to fight the flu epidemic in Ukraine.

A total of 246 MPs out of the 432 registered in the session hall voted for a bill amending the law on the state budget for 2009. The Regions Party did not participate in the vote, while some Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense Bloc MPs and nearly all of Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko (BYT) and Communist Party MPs supported the law.

The law foresees the allocation of over Hr 600 million for measures to fight the flu epidemic.

The document earlier foresaw the sum of Hr 200 million for these goals, however, the BYT faction proposed increasing the amount to UAH 608 million, saying that the National Bank of Ukraine declared the sum as its income and agreed to send it for measures to fight flu.

The proposal to increase the sum was supported during consideration of the bill at a meeting on Dec. 14.
