The Ukrainian government has called on President Victor Yushchenko to sign without delay a law on the allocation of Hr 608 million to fight the flu epidemic in Ukraine.

First Vice Premier Oleksandr Turchynov said this at a briefing in Kyiv on Dec. 16.

"A week remains before the end of the budget year, which ends on December 25, and I want to seize the opportunity and ask the president not to waste time, not to play political games, but sign the law immediately," he said.

Turchynov said that the Cabinet of Ministers is ready to give the Ukrainian opposition access to all documents that could help track the money assigned to fighting the flu pandemic.

As reported, Ukraine’s parliament voted onDec. 15to allocate Hr 608 million to fight the flu epidemic in Ukraine.

A total of 246 MPs out of the 432 registered in the session hall voted for a bill amending the law on the state budget for 2009. The Regions Party did not participate in the vote, while some Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense Bloc MPs and nearly all of Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko (BYT) and Communist Party MPs supported the law.

The law foresees the allocation of Hr 608 million for measures to fight the flu epidemic.
