The Alfa special unit of the Ukrainian Security Service was ready to stop the Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft carrying weapons, if it had landed at Kyiv airport.

"It is true that the Ukrainian Security Service knew that a plane with weapons onboard intended to land for refueling in Ukraine. We had been warned by our partners in the foreign special services. Alfa unit members were at the airport in full combat order ready to stop the plane, if it had arrived," the press center of the service told Interfax on Wednesday.

A press officer said that in this case the Ukrainian special service would have played only an auxiliary role.

He did not specify what country was supposed to become the destination of the aircraft.

The Il-76 was detained at Bangkok airport on December 12 loaded with hand grenade-launchers and man-portable air defense systems.
