The number of those who have died of flu and flu-like illnesses in Ukraine has increased to 918 as of late on Monday, Jan. 11, the Ukrainian Health Ministry has reported.

Twenty people, including a child and four pregnant women, have died of flu and its complications (pneumonia) over the past 24 hours, the ministry said. The greatest number of people died in Cherkasy region (five people) and Mykolaiv, Odesa, Donetsk, Chernihiv regions and Kyiv (two people in each).

According to the ministry, the epidemic threshold was exceeded in Dnipropetrovsk, Luhansk, Poltava, Sumy regions and Crimea. The number of instances is drawing close to the threshold in six regions and Kyiv.

Since the outbreak of the epidemic (October 29), 4.052 million people have contracted flu and respiratory infections, including 34,504 people over the past 24 hours.

The ministry publishes no separate statistics on cases of A/H1N1 influenza or swine flu.
