You're reading: Prosecutor: Suspect detained in Luhansk hospital explosion

The police have detained the head of the health and safety department of Luhansk city hospital No. 7, who is suspected of violation of safety regulationsthat resulted in fatalities, the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office reported.

The health and safety engineer has given a writtenpledge not to leave the place. He is suspected of violating safety regulations and job instructions under part 2 of Article 271 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which foresees imprisonment for up to seven years.

As reported, an oxygen tank blew up at the five-storey building of Luhansk City Hospital No. 7 at around 0900 on Monday. There were 366 people (261 patients and 105 hospital employees) in the hospital at the time of the explosion.

The Emergencies Minister said that six people were rescued from the debris, and the bodies of another eight people were found. Eight people could still be trapped under the collapsed hospital.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Luhansk region launched criminal proceedings into the explosion.
