German handball officials say that Germany and formerUkraine international Oleg Velyky has died of cancer. He was 32.

Velyky’s club, HSV Hamburg, says Saturday that he died overnight in his native Ukraine. Velyky made 59 international appearances forUkraine before taking German citizenship. He played 38 times for Germany, winning the world championship in 2007.

He was first diagnosed with skin cancer in 2003. He was believed to have recovered, but complications returned last September. Velyky is survived by his wife and six-year-old son. Funeral arrangements were not immediately available.
