Ukraine's new president Victor Yanukovych should be prepared to work with broad political circles, including the opposition, European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule has said.

Fule said this at the Czech House in Brussels on Mar. 4.

In particular, speaking about Ukraine, the European commissioner said there are two important challenges – political stability and economic recovery. To cope with the first challenge, the new president should be ready to work with broad political circles, including the opposition, he said stressing the need for the constitutional reform.

Commenting on the economic situation, Fule once again stressed the position of the European Commission that the new administration should carry out numerous reforms. Among the necessary steps, the commissioner named Ukraine’s return to the cooperation program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), implementation of reforms in gas sector, adoption of the state budget for 2010 and the continued work to restore the banking sector.

In addition, he said, major reforms should be conducted to combat corruption.
