Deutsche Welle says Reconstruction Bank to study labor migration from Ukraine
Mar 19, 2010 at 12:59 | Interfax-UkraineThe project, entitled "Migration and its consequences in Ukraine," was initiated by the government of the Czech Republic, as a large number of Ukrainians have in recent years moved to the neighbouring country to find jobs there. The EBRD supported such a non-profit project, because large-scale migration from Ukraine is also being seen in many other EU countries.
EBRD Principal Advisor Anton Usov said that "we are currently talking only about one particular study - the migration of workers between Ukraine and the Czech Republic, which are countries in which the EBRD is active. Apart from financing commercial projects, the bank is also considering various macroeconomic, social and political figures that reflect the investment climate and a general picture of the countries' economies".
As recession has taken hold, however, in many of the migration receiving countries, the pressure on their jobs and incomes has mounted. At the same time, large scale output decline in Ukraine has pushed up unemployment at home. Deutsche Welle said that the bank's work would be focused on understanding the impact of migration not only on individual workers, but also on the wider Ukrainian economy.
