You're reading: Foreign minister: Ukraine interested in pragmatic cooperation with NATO

Foreign Minister of Ukraine Kostiantyn Hryschenko has informed NATO Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy Dirk Brengelmann about the priorities of the new Ukrainian government in the realization of the domestic and foreign policy of the state, according to the foreign ministry.

Hryschenko said that "Ukraine is interested in the further development of partner relations and pragmatic cooperation with NATO," reads a report by the ministry’s press service.

Brengelmann, in turn, confirmed the alliance’s desire to develop active relations with new Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and the Ukrainian government. He noted NATO is ready to provide comprehensive assistance to Ukraine in carrying out domestic reforms aimed at developing democratic institutions and achieving high social and economic standards. Brengelmann praised Ukraine’s role as a contributor to international security.

The sides also discussed issues of ensuring effective mechanisms for coordinating the implementation of annual national programs of Ukraine, and priorities for cooperation in the sphere of strategic air transportation and non-military sectors.

Brengelmann was on a one-day visit to Ukraine.
