You're reading: Ukraine should not increase retirement age, says parliamentary speaker

Kyiv, May 22 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Chairman of Verkhovna Rada Volodymyr Lytvyn has ruled out the possibility of the retirement age increase in Ukraine.

"I eliminate this [possibility]. I think that it is unnecessary to disturb the disappointed Ukrainian society," the speaker said answering the question about an increase of the retirement age in Ukraine on Rada TV channel on Friday.

"We need a positive scenario of the country’s development. We need a little less conversation, a little more action in terms of reforms so that everyone felt stability, predictability, calmness, and that the situation is going to get better tomorrow," Lytvyn said.

He noticed that at present life expectancy for men in Ukraine is 62 years. And it is impossible to increase men’s retirement age to 65 years. "Women live a little longer than men – 72 years, but that is because they are tougher. Ukrainian women up to now are constructing railways, doing the dirtiest, hardest, and the most difficult work," the speaker said.
