Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has proposed staging the 2022 Winter Olympics in the Carpathian mountains in the west of the country, the presidential press service said on Thursday, May 27.

"If we decide to initiate this (the Olympic Games in Ukraine), we will start working on the official nomination of our country as the holder of the Winter Olympic Games in Carpathians," Yanukovych was quoted as saying in Lviv in western Ukraine.

Ukraine’s only previous experience in hosting Olympic events was when some of the soccer matches from the 1980 Moscow Games were held in Kyiv.

The next Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi, Russia in 2014.
