Istanbul, June 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine would like Russian banks to issue a loan for the construction of new reactors at Khmelnytsky and Rivne nuclear power plants, according to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

"In the context of cooperation in nuclear sector … it is important to construct new [nuclear] reactors at the Rivne and Khmelnytsky power plants. This is what we also need, and we would welcome the opportunity of lending from Russian banks for the construction of the plants," Yanukovych said during his meeting with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Istanbul on Tuesday.

In addition, Yanukovych noted that Ukrainian and Russian officials are presently in talks on Ukraine’s becoming a stockholder in a nuclear fuel factory in Angarsk in Russia.

"This opens up the opportunity for us to address joint issues with Russia and Kazakhstan to build a factory in Ukraine, which could provide not only Ukraine but also Europe with nuclear fuel in future," he added.
