You're reading: SBU chief: Threat of possible attack on Yanukovych not eliminated yet

Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Chief Valeriy Khoroshkovsky has said that the strengthening of security measures to protect President Viktor Yanukovych is linked to a threat made to his life in a phone call.

He said this in an interview with the Ukrayinska Pravda Web publication published on Tuesday, when asked why, within one month of Yanukovych assuming the presidential post, iron shields, more police, and unprecedented security measures have been taken to protect the head of state.

"It is a matter of threats. Yes, there was a threat to the president’s life. We have taken quite a lot of measures. We haven’t yet eliminated the threat. It was not a simple phone call. A simple call or a simple letter would not have been taken so seriously," Khoroshkovsky said.
