The worsening in relations between Russia and Belarus over a gas debt could harm both countries, according to Director of Kyiv Gorshenin Institute of Management Issues Volodymyr Fesenko.

"My feeling is that both Belarus and Russia have fallen into the same trap as [in a similar dispute with Ukraine]. I mean that they are making the same mistakes as in the gas relations between Ukraine and Russia. I mean that they are creating a conflict for the sake of promoting their interests," he said at a press conference in Kyiv on Monday.

Fesenko said that searching for a compromise could be more fruitful than aggravating the conflict.

He also said that the so-called Ukrainian-Russian gas crisis had harmed the images of both states.
