Ukraine is strengthening relations with the Russian Federation and other CIS countries taking into account its plans to join the European Union, and obligations to the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"Ukraine and the CIS countries are enhancing mutually beneficial economic cooperation taking into account Ukraine’s strategic course towards rapprochement with the EU and Ukraine’s commitments to the World Trade Organization," he said at a meeting with President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy in Kyiv in Friday.

Besides, Yanukovych said that Ukraine counts on long-term, pragmatic and mutually beneficial relations with the Russian Federation. He also said that Ukraine offered Russia to participate in the project on the modernization of Ukraine’s gas transport system, together with the European Union.
