Kyiv, July 10 – The Ukrainian parliament has ratified the Convention on the Establishment of a Scheme of Registration of Wills.

A total of 347 MPs out of the 436 registered in the parliament’s session hall on Saturday voted for a law on the ratification of the convention.

The convention was signed in Basel on May 16, 1972. Under the convention, the contracting states undertake to establish, in accordance with the provisions of this document, a scheme of registration of wills, with a view to facilitating, after the death of the testator, the discovery of the existence of the will.

Each contracting state establishes or appoints one or more bodies responsible for the registration of wills. In Ukraine, such a body is the Ukrainian Justice Ministry.

The convention remains in force indefinitely, however, any contracting state may denounce it by means of a notification addressed to the secretary general of the Council of Europe.
