You're reading: Heat wave in Ukraine expected to last two weeks

The hot weather in Ukraine will continue for the next two weeks, the head of the Ukrainian hydrometeorological center, Mykola Kulbida, said at a press conference in Kyiv on Monday.

"According to our assessments, there will be no significant change in air temperatures for the next two weeks in Ukraine," Kulbida said.

The head of the hydrometeorological center said temperatures would vary within two-three degrees. Temperatures will depend on the amount of cloud cover and passages of weather fronts. At the same time, these will not greatly influence the weather conditions, he added.

Kulbida noted that in recent weeks the highest temperature of 30-35 degrees was registered on almost the whole territory of Ukraine, while in the east and in the northeast it reached 36-39 degrees.

According to Kulbida, July and August are usually the hottest months in Ukraine. He noted that in these months the amount of days with the air temperature of 30 degrees and higher is 30-40 days in the most regions of Ukraine, while in the south of Ukraine 50-80 days.

"Thus, a temperature of over 30 degrees is not extraordinary," the head of the hydrometeorological center said.

Speaking about the trends for air temperature changes, Kulbida noted that over the last 20 years the average temperature in Ukraine in July and August grew "by 0.8 to over 1.5 degrees" depending on the region.

"The number of days with a temperature of 30-35 degrees is growing every year," Kulbida added.
