You're reading: Government officials pray with Russian Orthodox head

Russian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarch Kirill and Orthodox Christian Kyiv residents prayed for the political and spiritual unity of Ukraine at Volodymyrska Hill in Kyiv on Tuesday.

The patriarch conducted a service at the historic site on the banks of the River Dnipro, where the Kyivan Rus were baptized, and offered payers to Prince Volodymyr. The Day of Prince Volodymyr will be marked on July 28.

About 2,000 people from Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities gathered to pray with the patriarch.

In particular, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn, Ukrainian Economy Minister Vasyl Tsushko, acting Head of Kyiv City State Administration Oleksandr Popov, Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Hanna Herman, representatives of Roman Catholic and Armenia Apostolic Churches attended the service.

After the service, Patriarch Kirill called for all Ukrainian believers "to pray for a reduction in disharmony" in all social spheres.
