Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said he expects the General Prosecutor's Office to work more effectively on issues of the legal adoption of children and organ transplantation in Ukraine.

He announced this at a meeting with Prosecutor General Oleksandr Medvedko on Monday, August 9, the presidential press service reported.

Yanukovych drew Medvedko’s attention to the issue of the illegal adoption and removal of children from Ukraine. The president said that recent reports in the media about numerous cases of the illegal adoption of children using false documents should be thoroughly checked.

"I would ask you to take this issue under control at an early stage – the stage of the registration of documents on the adoption and removal of children," he said.

Yanukovych said he also expected the Prosecutor General’s Office to wage a more effective fight against the illegal transplantation of organs in Ukraine. He said that the issue concerned the need to check reports in the media about such cases.

"In my opinion, the work of law enforcement agencies in this direction is ineffective, and I would ask you to bring this issue to a proper level," Yanukovych said, while addressing Medvedko.

Medvedko, in turn, said that the work of law enforcement officers in this direction could not be described as effective.

"As for the removal of children and the illegal transplantation of organs, I agree with you. The work of law enforcement agencies in this direction cannot be considered satisfactory. Therefore, I promise you that we will soon resolve this situation and take additional measures to strengthen prosecutorial supervision," he said.
