Ukraine's Minister for Family, Youth and Sports Ravil Safiullin has said that at present the agencies of state power, mass media, and social advertising should step up efforts on promoting the birth and upbringing of two children in the family, especially in young families.

According to the department for family gender policy at the family, youth and sports ministry, the most common type of family with children under the age of 18 in Ukraine is the one-child family, as in past years, the minister said.

"A comparative analysis of census data shows that the number of families who are limited to only one child is increasing from year to year," the minister noted.

The distribution of families with children in cities in terms of the number of children differs from those in rural areas. A total of 79% of city households have one child against 61% of rural ones. There are more families with two children in rural areas compared to those in cities, one third against one fifth correspondingly, and the families with three and more children – 7% against 1.6% correspondently.
